HOW TO ORGANIZE PRESS CONFERENCES / EVENTS
WHAT?
A range of press events may be called for, depending on the stage of the campaign or purpose. Events may include:
- Press conference;
- Town hall meeting or forum;
- Initial press statement to be followed up with further press events;
- Presentation of research or study, especially by academics or community members;
- Rally / Speak Out involving members and community leaders;
- March or action involving large crowd.
WHEN?
- A weekday morning is often the best time for a press conference because it is often most convenient for reporters and gives them time to get the story to press. However, if you plan to involve members in an action or rally to generate press, you may need to choose a weekday afternoon after work or lunch time.
- While Saturday is often convenient for members, much of the press work a five-day week, and you'll get better coverage on a weekday. It takes extra work to get the press out on Saturday.
- Remember not to schedule your event opposite some other scheduled event that will compete for air time.
