What's
Happening at the Legislature?
This section provides information on bills of interest to the disability community. In previous legislative sessions, bills such as mental health insurance parity, insurance coverage for autism and cochlear implants, and voting legislation were listed here.
The new 2009-2011 legislature has started as of January 5, 2009. Bills are starting to be introduced, but the most urgent bill will be the next two-year budget bill. This will be introduced by Gov. Doyle on February 17, 2009. You can track the progress of that bill in our State Budget section and other disability-related bills in this section of DAWN.
The regular 2007-09 legislative session ended in March 2008. There were a total of 1544 bills introduced (573 bills introduced in the Senate; 971 in the Assembly). Gov. Doyle signed 225 of those bills, including the state budget, into law. After the regular session ended, the legislature was called into special session. They addressed the state budget shortfall, campaign finance reform, and the Great Lakes Compact.
Introduced Legislation
- The Survival Coalition of Wisconsin Disability Organizations has developed a budget paper for the 2009-2011 Biennial Budget. In addition to the budget paper there is a Statement of Principles that serves as the basis for the budget paper.
