Take Your Legislator to Work Campaign Underway
October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM). To celebrate, BPDD is conducting the Take Your Legislator to Work Campaign. Through the campaign, Wisconsin workers with disabilities who love their jobs get to show their legislator the importance of working in the community at competitive wages.
People who participate in the campaign have their legislator visit them briefly at work. During the visit, the participant has the opportunity to show their legislator the importance of community-integrated employment for people with disabilities in Wisconsin. BPDD provides support to participants by facilitating initial contact with their legislator, scheduling their legislator’s visit, and assisting with any other logistics.
In 2011, the campaign’s first year, over 40 visits occurred, with businesses like Culvers, Wal-Mart, and Goodwill participating. This year, BPDD has been working with Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce and local chambers of commerce to promote the campaign to businesses in Wisconsin.
More about the 2012 Take Your Legislator to Work Campaign is available, including information for prospective participants, facilitators, and Regional Coordinators.
