Re: Thank You for Increasing Transit and Paratransit Funding
The Wisconsin Board for People with Developmental Disabilities (BPDD) would like to thank you for voting in support of increased funding for transit and paratransit in the 2013-2015 State Budget. These services are crucial to many people with disabilities in Wisconsin and we appreciate your support on the issue.
Increased funding for transit and paratransit will allow people with disabilities to be more independent and live in the community without high-cost transportation services. Many of these citizens rely on transportation for work, school, community participation, health care, and other activities. Transit, paratransit, and specialized transportation services are essential to allow people with disabilities to maintain their independence. Direct care workers also utilize transit for employment and will benefit from increased funding.
Almost half of transit use is for employment-related purposes. Many people with disabilities utilize transit and paratransit services to get to work and live in the community. When people with disabilities have jobs in the community, they are more likely to pay taxes and rely less on publicly-funded programs. When people with disabilities live in the community, they are less likely to live in expensive nursing homes and institutions.
Thank you for voting to increase transit and paratransit funding. These services are vital to nurturing community opportunities and employment options for people with disabilities.
